A few weeks ago, the Huffington Post published an article entitled “10 Facts Only ‘Lord of the Rings’ Super Fans” know. I wasn’t running this blog then, which is why I’m bringing this up now.
While it wasn’t inaccurate (although I’m not sure about the claim that Thranduil was a blond; I’m researching that question), the choice of facts was rather odd. Number 5 references the Western Gate to Moria and who built it. But why would anyone care about that? “It was created by the grandson of Fëanor!” you say. “Cool story, bro,” says the average Joe who reads the Huffington Post.
I felt like the only fact that anyone would have found intriguing is the first one–that Aragorn and Arwen are very distant cousins. I doubt anyone would have continued reading the article if it weren’t for that particular fact.
Oh, and defining a “super fan” as someone who has read The Silmarillion and the Appendices? Really? Let’s talk about the 12-volume History of Middle-earth set in my (and many other people’s) possession. Psh. Amateur.
