One of the most daunting things about reading The Silmarillion is keeping all of the names straight. I love this, so I want to make it more accessible for the general reader with brief character profiles.
- Name: Melian
- Immediate Family:
- Husband: Thingol
- Daughter: Lúthien Tinúviel
- Home: Lived in Beleriand for most of the First Age
- Claim to fame: The only Maia to marry one of the Children of Ilúvatar, Melian not only conceived and bore a child but she also had special power over the kingdom of Doriath.
- Why I think he’s interesting: You could make the argument that Melian was one of the three most powerful beings in Middle-earth during the events of The Silmarillion (Morgoth and Sauron being the other two). For all her power, Melian was not only content to play a passive role in the events of the age–but also a relatively passive role in ruling her kingdom. Is that because she was of the same race as the Valar? Perhaps.
