Silmarillion Character Profile: Finwë

I love The Silmarillion, the epic history book of the First Age of Middle-earth. However, it’s not exactly the most accessible novel you’ll ever read. One of the most daunting things about reading The Silmarillion is keeping all of the names straight. The bulk of the Silm takes place over the course of 600 or so years, with 3-4 generations of Elves playing important parts and many more generations of men coming and going. If a character isn’t mentioned frequently, it can be really easy to forget who they are or why you should care about them. I love the Silm, so I want to make it more accessible for the general reader. I’m going to do quick profiles for each of the more important characters in the book. Hopefully when a name comes up that you just can’t remember, this will help.

  • Name: Finwë
  • Immediate Family:
    • Wife #1: Míriel
    • Wife #2: Indis
    • Son #1: Fëanor
    • Son #2: Fingolfin
    • Son #3: Finarfin
  • Home: primarily Valinor (the Blessed Realm)
  • Claim to fame: the father of Fëanor and the leader of the Noldor (one of the three Elven tribes)
  • Why I think he’s interesting: he’s the only Elf in recorded history to marry twice (and some people blamed a lot of later problems on that choice)
